French 1 Chapitre 4

Français 1 CP 2019-2020
Bonjour et Bienvenue,
Your child has started a new chapter in French. Foreign language study provides many benefits
for students in addition to the ability to communicate in another language. Students who study
another language improve their first language skills. They become more aware of the world
around them and they learn to appreciate diversity.

In Chapter 4, the students will be learning how to:
  • talk about their families
  • describe their homes and neighborhoods
  • tell what belongs to them and others
  • describe more people and things around them

You can help your child be successful in his or her study of French even if you are not familiar with the
language. Here are a few suggestions to help you and your child practice the material in this chapter.
Help your child practice vocabulary for talking about family members by helping him or her create two
different versions of your family tree. In the first version, label each family member as he or she relates
to your child. IN the second version, label each family member as s/he relates to you. When you have
completed both family trees, display them in such a way that your child can readily refer to them.
With your child, make a basic blueprint of your home. Then label each room and related exterior
features there within in French. As an additional challenge, you may want to have your child write down
basic items found in each room.
Feel free to plan other activities you think will help your child develop her/his language skills.
Thank you for supporting our classroom work. Feel free to contact me if you wish to discuss
your child’s language education
Sincerely,

Monsieur Rollinson

Français 1 Intro letter to Parents

Français 1 CP 2019-2020
Bonjour et Bienvenue,
Your child is beginning a new course in French. World language study provides many benefits for students as well
as to communicate in another language. Students who study another language improve their first language skills.
They become more aware of the world around them and learn to appreciate diversity.
Your child has received a syllabus which contains class policies and procedures. In addition, the syllabus includes
a tentative outline of the units for the entire school year. The first semester (20 weeks) is planned in more detail.
It is suggested that you review the syllabus with your child to familiarize yourself with the policies and expectations
of this class. This is a College Preparatory level class which means that it is rigorous and fast paced.
It is expected that you student is motivated and will speak in French in front of his/her peers.
Also it is important to discuss with your child, that the use of Google Translate or any web-based translator is
strictly forbidden, including typing phrasesHow to say…. in French.” in a web browser.
We will begin with a Preliminary Lesson which will introduce a broad overview of common words and expressions
in French. Students will learn how to:
  1. Greet people formally and informally
  2. Say good-bye
  3. Ask how people are doing
  4. Ask someone their name and give their own
  5. Express simple courtesies
  6. Ask for and say the days of the week
  7. Ask for and say the months of the year
  8. Count from 0 to 60
  9. Ask for and say the time
You can help your child be successful with his/her study of French even if you are not familiar with the language.
Here are a few suggestions to help your child practice the material of this unit.
Visit the online version of the textbook, found on Google Classroom, and go to the Preliminary Lesson Unit.
Look at the photos of young people from different parts of the Francophone world. Use a map or globe to find
the places where these people are from. Encourage your child to research a couple of the locations that interest
him/her.
To aid your child master the days of the week and months, use a calendar. Review them in chronological order then
mix them up. This will ensure that he/she knows them truly and is not just reciting them in order.
Use a real clock to help your child learn to tell time in French. Change the hands and ask, il est quelle heure ?
Start with easy times then progress to more difficult ones.
*REMEMBER THAT EUROPEAN COUNTRIES USE THE 24 HOUR CLOCK* AKA MILITARY TIME.
Feel free to plan other activities you believe will help your child develop his/her language skills.
Thank you for supporting our classroom work. Feel free to contact me if you wish to discuss your child’s language
education.
Cordially,

Monsieur D Rollinson          Prof de français
